There’s something about December that makes everything feel a bit more magical. Maybe it’s the fairy lights strung up everywhere, or the excuse to eat your body weight in mince pies. Either way, this month was a good one.
Festive Outings
The Christmas spirit started early this year. My girlfriend and my cousin headed out to the local Christmas market one evening and came back with the usual haul – overpriced candles, mulled wine stories, and some cracking photos. The tree in the market square looked incredible all lit up.

The following day we went to pick out our own tree from a local farm. There’s always that debate – do you go for the perfectly symmetrical one, or the slightly wonky one with “character”? We went somewhere in between, and I’m happy to report it survived the whole month without dropping all its needles.
The Annual Gathering
One of the best parts of December is catching up with everyone. We had a proper family get-together at a local pub – good food, plenty of drinks, and that lovely chaotic energy you only get when you put a dozen people around a table.

These gatherings remind you what the season’s actually about. Not the presents or the stress of cooking a turkey just right – just being together, laughing at the same old jokes, and making plans for the year ahead.
Christmas at Home
By Boxing Day, the house was looking properly festive. Tree decorated, presents under it (and a few already opened, obviously), and the RGB lighting doing its thing. There’s something satisfying about having the ambient lighting match the Christmas vibes.

We spent most of the holiday period doing exactly what you should – eating too much, watching films, and occasionally emerging from the sofa to refill the snack bowl.
Tech Corner: Getting Started with Matter
I picked up a Matter-enabled smart bulb on New Year’s Eve, and it got me thinking about how far smart home tech has come. If you haven’t heard of Matter, here’s the quick version:
What is Matter?
Matter is a new smart home standard backed by Apple, Google, Amazon, and Samsung (among others). The big selling point? Devices work across all platforms without needing specific hubs or apps.
Why Should You Care?
- No more ecosystem lock-in – A Matter bulb works with HomeKit, Google Home, Alexa, AND Home Assistant
- Local control – Matter devices communicate locally, so they’re faster and work even if your internet goes down
- Future-proof – Most new smart home devices are shipping with Matter support
Quick Tip for Home Assistant Users
If you’re running Home Assistant, enable the Matter integration through the UI. You’ll need a Thread border router (most recent HomePods, Google Nest Hubs, and some Echo devices have one built in) for the best experience. The setup is surprisingly smooth – just scan the QR code and you’re off.
One thing I’ve learned: check if your device supports Matter over Thread vs Matter over WiFi. Thread devices form a mesh network and are generally more reliable, but WiFi devices work fine too – they just won’t extend your Thread network.
Looking Ahead
December was a month of proper rest and recharging. Good food, great company, and enough downtime to actually feel refreshed going into the new year. Here’s hoping 2026 brings more of the same – maybe with fewer electronics projects left half-finished in the garage.
Happy New Year, everyone. See you in January.
